BIS Graduates

Carman Allen
Fall 2004 Graduate

Director, EMS/Paramedic Training
Flint Hills Technical College
Emporia, KS

“The BIS degree is a great way to complete a bachelor's program for those of us who have lot's of college credit but not enough in any of the typical four year degree curricula.  As a paramedic and paramedic instructor it allowed me the flexibility to apply many of the credits I already had, plus my project was directly related to my full-time paramedic instructor position.

I highly recommend this degree option for those who are non-traditional students, are having to work full-time, or have a considerable number of college credits not focused on any one traditional field of study.

Great program!”

"Emporia State University, with its online degree completion program, has let me fulfill my goal of getting a college degree while still working full time. It has been a great example for my children to see their father work on academics. It shows them the value of education."

"I get a great satisfaction from taking classes online, and the professors are always helpful. I first read about online classes in a magazine article. Ten days later, I was enrolled at Emporia State University and starting my classes. I am proud of my connection to Emporia State University. Off-Site and Distance Education goes out of their way to help me with my online study program."

"The Liberal Arts Degree offered through the BIS program provides a great overall education, but it is also focuses on an area of the student's choice. Having a bachelors degree will be something I will always be proud of. And who knows, I may get a Masters Degree. They are available online also."

Patricia E. Yonker
Spring 2002 Graduate
President of Into the Swim, Inc.
Marlton, NJ

"The BIS program? It is quality education and a degree that you know you earned. If anyone thinks that distance learning at ESU is easy, she or he should find another on-line school to 'attend.' Convenient, absolutely!.a cake walk, no way! The classes that I took to complete my degree were challenging, stimulating and evidence that one needs to be willing to work independently. While taking courses on-line, I also attended a local university. The class discussion drivel was dull, compared to reading the well-thought-out comments posted on the discussion boards of the on-line classes. In the sixties, I was an ESU dropout, to get married and move to New Jersey. In 2000, I became a regional manager dropout, in order to accomplish my life-long dream. The last thing I wanted to do was to study business. Thirty-some years in the school of hard-knocks (and some night courses) taught me as much as I needed to know to succeed as a valued employee. The BIS program offered me new horizons to explore and the opportunity to pursue subjects that I found of interest. I was especially interested in Sociology and how it influences our culture, art, and architecture. The independent study program has given me the confidence that I needed to become an entrepreneur, not just a good employee. And, like so many other life-long students, it has given me the opportunity to be more involved with my son. He is our vice-president! Wish us luck in our new venture, a swimming instruction school."

"The BIS program is a great way to complete your bachelor's degree. The people, information and ability to complete coursework at any time of the day, without interfering with family, friends or work, is wonderful. This flexibility allowed me to complete my degree while still maintaining a healthy relationship with my son."

"My bachelor's degree increases my chances for promotion and makes pursuing a master's degree a reality."

Spring 2000 Graduate
Payless Shoe Source
Computer Program Analyst
Topeka, KS

"I can honestly say that without the online program, I wouldn't have been able to finish in the timely fashion that I did. Working full time and raising a family didn't allow me the time to drive to campus and attend classes. With the online program I finished my degree in 12 months, AND like I was hoping, it doubled my salary. One month after I graduated, I started working in the IS&T department at Payless where my career opportunity is endless."

Kate Mutch
Fall 1999 Graduate
Public Services Librarian

"This program enabled me to complete a goal I'd been working towards for 20 years. Finishing my bachelor's degree makes me feel like a better role model for my three children. Additionally, it put me in the position to be able to pursue my MLS, which is a professional goal I have set for myself after I realized that working in public libraries was the place for me."
