The Bulletin is published on Mondays and Thursdays during the academic year. It is published by the ESU Board of Student Media at Emporia State University. Buzz In - ESU's Information Portal

Buzz In is Emporia State University's web portal. Similar to other web portals, such as My Yahoo or My MSN, Buzz In will allow users to personalize and customize displayed content to suit their information needs. The Buzz In Portal will serve as the single point of entry for the university's information assets. Not only will the portal allow access to Banner self-service modules, but will also form a cohesive and flexible interface that will support the integration of other university systems such as Blackboard, MyData, and StudentAccess.

Any student in unpaid status who has been approved for financial aid may request a tuition deferment. Students must complete the Tuition and Fee Deferment form available at www.emporia.edu/busaff/payment_options.htm.

If deferment is anticipated to be longer than 5 days, contact the Deferment Office at (620) 341-5340 for an Extended Deferment Form. There is a fee for this service.

Disability ServicesThe Office of Disability Services facilitates and coordinates accommodations and services for students with documented disabilities at Emporia State University. Emporia State has a long history of providing services for people with disabilities. We are committed to meeting the unique needs of the students. The office also promotes a successful transition to college and to work, campus and community resource information, disability awareness, and voter registration information.

Students are encouraged to register with the office prior to enrolling in classes. Students can self-identify to the office by submitting documentation and making an appointment to address individual needs. Documentation requirements are unique to each disabling condition.

The Relay Service is available for those with communication disabilities and can be reached by calling 711 from an ESU telephone.

MoneyThe Office of Student Financial Aid at ESU is pleased to assist you as you look for ways to pay for your education. To apply for financial aid, students must be accepted into a degree program and enrolled in 6 or more undergraduate credit hours in Fall or Spring or 4 credit hours for Summer OR 4 or more graduate credit hours in Fall, Spring, or Summer. Exception: Students who have qualified for a Pell Grant do not need to meet the minimum credit hours.

The Heartland Alliance for Higher Education was established in 1995 as a cooperative effort between Kansas higher education institutions in an effort to offer more and better services to students and to promote communication, articulation, and cooperative agreements between institutions. Heartland Alliance members are Allen County Community College, Butler County Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Emporia State University, Flint Hills Technical College, Highland Community College, Hutchinson Community College, Johnson County Community College, Kansas City Kansas Community College, and Pittsburg State University.


Installment Plan

The University makes available an installment plan for the payment of tuition and fees. Under this plan, the initial payment will be approximately thirty-three percent of the total fees due, plus a $25.00 administrative fee. The balance is to be paid in two additional installments. A late fee of $25.00 will be assessed for each payment not made by the due date. An installment contract specifying amounts due must be arranged for in person or can be designated as an option on the payment agreement form. The Hornet Card is a student's official University identification card. The Hornet Card grants access to many University products and services:

  • Library Access

  • Meal Plan Access

  • Vending Purchase Card

  • On- and off-campus Debit Card

  • Sporting/Cultural Event Access

  • ATM Card (through Lyon County State Bank)

Students are responsible for all University property obtained with their Hornet Card. If the ID card is lost, report it immediately to the University Police and Safety Office. If a card is found, it also may be returned to either office.

Distance students who are interested in obtaining an ESU student ID should contact the Office of Lifelong Learning at 1-877-332-4249 for details. The Hornet Card costs $15.

Studying Online often presents a new learning experience for students. ESU's Office of Technology and Computing Services (TCS) offers a variety of services to students in regards to technology and computing, assistance with Stumail and Blackboard, as well as providing various online tutorials.

Transcripts may be requested in person or by mail. Telephone requests are not acceptable. A written request with an original signature is required. Requests will normally by processed within 24 hours. However, a longer period of time may be required for processing at end of each semester and at enrollment time. The ESU Academic Records Office provides the following verifications:

  • Enrollment verifications for health insurance

  • Enrollment verifications for student loan deferment

  • GPA verification for good student discounts

  • Attendance and degree verification

Verification of enrollment may be requested by the student, parent, insurance company, bank, or loan company. A picture ID is not required. The request may be made in person at the Academic Records Office, Plumb Hall, Room 108D, by phone at 620/341-5419, or in writing to:

The Writing Center

Writing CenterThe Writing Center at Emporia State University promotes writing as a tool for teaching and learning in every discipline and assists writers in preparing for the practical, real-life applications of writing in the workplace as well as in the academic world.

The Virtual Writing Center site is open 24 hours a day. Clients may email their documents for review, evaluation, and consultation anytime during the day and expect an next-day turn-around time. At night, clients may still email documents with the understanding that they may have to wait twenty-four hours (or in the case of the weekend, until Monday) to get a response. The Virtual Writing Center offers the following services:

  • Writing Consultations via email (see Consultations for details).

  • Writing Handouts. We offer a number of "handouts" on writing-related topics. Some are quick reviews for punctuation and common grammar errors.

  • Help for ESL students. We offer specific help for ESL students, including links to other ESL sites on the Internet. (Composition).

  • The Grammar Hotline. This service offers quick answers to grammar and documentation questions. (Grammar)

  • Documentation assistance. You can go to this web site (Documentation) to find models for the most common types of sources, or you can link to an online handbook for a more complete set of models.
